Learn to Birdwatch! 5 Days/4Nights (Self Drive) from Cairns Do you have an interest in birds and would like to learn more about them and about the rewarding art of birdwatching?

 

This is an opportunity to have personalised guidance in finding and identifying birds, and learning about the local birds in the Daintree area of Tropical North Queensland. We will cover bird characteristics and how to observe and describe them, bird behaviour and habitats, and the use of optics. There will many opportunities for observation in the field in a variety of habitats, and for improving your skills.

 

These skills will stand you in good stead long after your visit to Daintree.

Blue Mountains

Highlands and Coastal South East Bird Tour

Highlands and Coastal South EastJoin this fully-accommodated nine-day tour to one of the best areas for birdwatching in Victoria, first traveling to Jindabyne in the New South Wales high country to look for Grey Currawong, Flame and Scarlet Robins, Olive Whistler and Diamond Firetail. Gang Gang Cockatoos and Yellow-tailed Black-cockatoos are often seen in Jindabyne. Then travel across the Victorian border to Mallacoota and the Croajingolong National Park with habitats ranging from rainforest to coastal heathlands and beaches. You will look for Ground Parrot, Southern Emu-wren, Striated Fieldwren, Tawny-crowned Honeyeater and beautiful firetail in the heathlands. In the rainforest Lyrebirds are fairly common, and summer migrants include Rufous Fantail, Black-faced Monarch and Leaden Flycatcher. White-breasted Sea-eagles nest in the area, with King Parrots, Bowerbirds and Azure Kingfishers live near the lodge.

Birding in Western Victoria

8 days, fully accommodated

Western VictoriaJoin us for a relaxing fully-accommodated 11-day tour birdwatching along the Great Ocean Road, in the Grampians and at Little Desert National Park in Western Victoria. From Sydney we travel along the Hume Highway to Albury. The following morning we will have time for birdwatching in Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park, an important reserve for the endangered Regent Honeyeaters and Turquoise Parrots. We move on to Geelong where we will have two nights with a full day for birdwatching around the Bellarine Peninsula visiting various habitats including wetlands and coastal heathlands. Along the Great Ocean Road, many of the stops for the spectacular scenic attractions are also great spots for birdwatching but we will also visit some key sites for birds in the Otway Ranges. A great opportunity for finding the birds of the open oceans, coastal cliffs and beaches and the mountain forests. The Grampians National Park is renowned for its wildflowers but the area is also good for birdwatching. Over 200 species have been recorded in the dry sclerophyll forests where koalas are often seen. Another highlight of the trip will be our two nights at Little Desert Lodge near Nhill. Set in 117 hectares of natural bushland next to Little Desert National Park, it is a great area for Birdwatching and we will have a full day to look for the specialties of the mallee including Malleefowl. Then travel east through Swan Hill and the Riverina back towards Sydney, stopping for birdwatching along the way looking for species such as Regent Parrots and Yellow Rosellas near the Murray River and Superb Parrots through the Riverina.

3 days, On Demand – Minimum 1 Person

This personalised birding tour provides you with the opportunity to visit a number of habitats for a great range of bird species. The first day takes you into the wet forests regions for some species at the very west of their range including Wonga Pigeon and Black-faced Monarch (strictly summer). Then through farmland and open woodland to Bunyip State Park with its changing topography and woodland types with species including Superb Fairy-wren, Eastern Rosella, Scarlet Robin, Southern Emu-wren, Superb Lyrebird, Beautiful Firetail, Gang-gang Cockatoo, and Golden Whistler. You will overnight in Healesville in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges. On to drier forest of Central Victoria for dry land birds including Horsfield’s Bronze Cuckoo, White-bellied Cuckoo-shrike, Diamond Firetail, Common Bronzewing and a visit to the Greater Bendigo National Park should produce Red-capped and Hooded Robin, Purple-gaped Honeyeater, Restless Flycatcher, Gilbert’s Whistler and white-browed Babbler. Rare birds for this area might include Australian Ringneck, Pied Butcherbird, Budgerigar, Black Honeyeater and Black-eared Cuckoo. You will overnight in the historic city of Bendigo. The final day takes in the Water Treatment Plant at Werribee where the complex network of lagoons, settling tanks, evaporation ponds, natural waterways and shoreline produce an abundance of waterfowl, waders and terns. You will be adding many to your list – including Pink-eared Duck, Australasian Shoveler, Cape Barren Goose, Hoary-headed Grebe, Red-necked Stint, Curlew Sandpiper, Whistling & Black Kite, White-bellied Sea-eagle, Little & Wedge-tailed Eagle, and possibly some rarities such as Hudsonian Godwit, Little Stint and Eastern Yellow Wagtail.

 

Each night there will be opportunities for some spotlighting, looking for Sooty Owl, Southern Boobook, Powerful Owl, Spotted Nightjar, Tawny Frogmouth and Australian Owlet-nightjar.

Habitats range from the dry red interior to the lush and green Mt Lofty Ranges; wetlands and mangroves around Adelaide and estuaries in the Coorong, floodplains along the Murray River, vast expanses of the famous semi-arid mallee, and outback deserts with spectacular mountain ranges.

We hope to see over 130 species of birds including all 13 endemics (including five cockatoos and parrots, the infamous Noisy Scrub-bird and the stunningly beautiful Red-eared Firetail). In addition there are many endemic sub-species and races to be found such as the Western Whipbird, the Western Ground Parrot and the Crested Shrike-tit.

Birding Adventure to the Kimberleys

KimberleysA Birding Adventure to the Kimberley area of Western Australia , travelling by 4WD and camping along the way! We visit the Broome Bird Observatory, Windjana Gorge, Mornington Station, King Edward River, Mitchell Falls, Kununurra before travelling back to Broome via the Bungle Bungles and Geikie Gorge.

 

At Broome we should see migratory shorebirds, White-breasted and Mangrove Golden Whistlers, Shining Flycatcher and Mangrove Robin Explore the gorges and savannah woodland of the Kimberleys and visit Mornington Station owned and managed by Australian Wildlife Conservancy. A haven for wildlife, the endangered Gouldian Finch is regularly seen on the Mornington. Among many other species are Crimson Finch and Purple-crowned Fairy-wren, the elusive Red Goshawk and Grey Falcon, Black Grasswren, White-quilled Rock-pigeon, Sandstone Shrike-thrush, Yellow-rumped Mannikin and perhaps Yellow Chat.
